save money to build more attractions

pcgame

Video computer games have become as much a pillar of our entertainment universe as books and movies. Why is it that so many of us are drawn to the computer monitor or TV screen like flies? A bit of history might help explain the phenomenon.

Originally computers were all work and no play, being outrageously expensive to build and operate. But computer engineers and designers, being overgrown kids after all, soon began to get comfortable with their big room-filling machines. In their idle hours it occured to them that it might be kind of cool to have the computer show some spaceships and planets cruising around the galaxy. An in the 1960s a group of fun-loving computer geniuses created SpaceWar, the father of the famous arcade game Astroids.

These games were well received by geniuses and regular folks alike, which motivated the geniuses to design some more fun stuff. They could have used the computers for a lot of diversions, but somehow the visual element of the games activated the imagination. Over time we got Pong, PacMan and a continually evolving string of games, including software that eventually could beat chess masters at their own game.

By the late 1980s computer games software was getting quite sophisticated, with the invention of Sim City. This product expanded on what was going on through all the previous games; the players were being drawn into an imaginary world. Not unlike books and movies, these video games were very satisfying mentally. Sim City actually allowed the user to create amazing cities and even worlds.

Also in the 1980s, a group of computer programmers began creating software that would show moving images all generated by computer. The images started out very simple, almost like stick figures but they could dance in time to a music track. No skin, no facial features but it was very exciting to think what might come with more powerful computers. The computing power grew exponentially and, over 20 years, we now have not only some fabulout computer generated movie effects and whole characters, but the realism of video games has taken a quantum leap forward.

A good video game will draw you in to another world and, unlike a book or movie, a computer game will offer an interactive experience. In fact, at least one computer game has become sufficiently popular to become an action movie; think Mario Brothers. But it's funny that sometimes a simple game can be as entertaining as a much more sophisticated game. Some of the most beloved games of all are Tetris (stack those blocks), Pac Man and Pong.

A modern computer will still do a great job of playing state-of-the-art video games. There are hundreds of options, including many that pit you online against other players. Then there are the specialty consoles like PlayStation, Nintendo and XBox360. With tricked-out controllers, guitars and wands, you can really develop some hand-eye coordination by playing many of the current titles.

One of the most fun educational games is Roller Coaster Tycoon, where you build your own amusement park and then operate it with "real" guests making decisions about which rides to take. If a guest loses their lunch on a roller coaster you'd better have a custodian clean it up or the guests will stay away. You must watch income and expenses and save money to build more attractions. This is a great game.

But the bottom line as to why we're so enamored with computer games software is that it captures our imagination in a variety of interactive ways. Our games are prized possessions and it is wise to treat them carefully to make them last.

EXCLUSIVE: ‘BioShock 2′ Guide – Every Plasmid And Tonic Revealed

"BioShock 2" drops next Tuesday, and I know that feels like a long time, but I've got a juicy exclusive to tide you over: A guide to every plasmid and tonic in the game. Don't worry, no story spoilers here. It's just a lengthy list of all the delightful powers you'll be able to discover in the strange and creepy world of Rapture. And here we go!

PLASMIDS

Plasmids are the equivalent of magic in the world of Rapture. Using "eve," you can unleash all sorts of interesting attacks right from the palm of your hand. Many of the plasmids from the first "BioShock" return in the sequel, but they've all been given interesting enhancements.

Most plasmids can be purchased at the Gatherer's Garden vending machines, while some will be given to you throughout the story.

(Note: These are only the single-player plasmids. There are some multiplayer-exclusive plasmids to unlock, but we'll save those for another time.)

Electro Bolt
Level 1 – Fire lightning from your hand. Shoot water to cause it to become electrified, killing enemies standing in it.
Level 2 – Charge up a lightning attack and release it. Lightning will arc to multiple enemies.
Level 3 – Charge up to fire an extended beam of lightning (think "Ghostbusters"). Also, every non-charged shot will cause lightning to arc between enemies.

Telekinesis
Level 1 – Pick up objects and dead enemies and use them as projectiles.
Level 2 – Pick up heavier objects and do more damage with thrown projectiles.
Level 3 – Pick up all moveable objects as well as living creatures (!) like splicers.

Security Command
Level 1 – Throw a ball of energy which will cause security cameras, turrets and bots to attack anything targeted.
Level 2 – Charge up to summon up to two friendly security bots.
Level 3 – Charge up to summon boosted security bots.

Incinerate!
Level 1 – Throw a ball of fire, igniting a single targeted enemy. Set oil slicks ablaze, dealing fire damage to anyone standing nearby.
Level 2 – Charge up a fire attack and release it. A fire bomb will be unleashed, igniting multiple enemies at once.
Level 3 – Charge up for a flamethrower attack. Also, every non-charged shot will be an area-effecting fire bomb.

Scout
Level 1 – Become an invisible scout who can move throughout the world without threat of attack. You can fire plasmids, but you'll have to return to your physical body (which remains in place) to progress.
Level 2 – While scouting, you're also able to hack security and vending machines.

Winter Blast
Level 1 – Throw a ball of ice, freezing foes for a brief period.
Level 2 – Charge up and attack to freeze a foe in a solid block of ice. They remain frozen for longer and can be used as a telekenisis projectile.
Level 3 – Charge up for a beam of ice attack. Also, single shots cause enemies to become a solid block of ice.

Hypnotize
Level 1 – Throw a ball at a splicer to enrage it, causing it to attack anything nearby (including you).
Level 2 – Charge up and hit a targeted splicer to make it an ally for a few minutes. The splicer will follow you around and fight for you.
Level 3 – Charge up and hit a Big Daddy to make him friendly for a few minutes.

Cyclone Trap
Level 1 – Set a proximity trap on the ground. Enemies that walk over it will be thrown high in the air and land hard, causing damage.
Level 2 – Traps can now be charged with attack plasmids like fire, ice and electricity, dealing specific kinds of damage.
Level 3 – Traps can be placed on walls and ceilings.

Insect Swarm
Level 1 – Send a swarm of bugs and home in on an enemy, causing damage.
Level 2 – A single swarm can now attack multiple enemies.
Level 3 – Enemies killed by swarms will become proximity swarm bombs. Enemies that walk over the hive corpse will be attacked by the swarm.

Decoy
Level 1 – Create a decoy of yourself, distracting enemies.
Level 2 – Decoy will reflect damage back at enemies.
Level 3 – Decoy will reflect damage and heal the player as it takes damage from enemies.

Secret Plasmid
Sorry, there's one plasmid I'm not allowed to talk about until after the game releases. But trust me, it's worth the wait.
TONICS

Tonics are boosts that you can equip to give your character certain passive abilities. In "BioShock 2" you're able to unlock around two dozen tonic slots by the end of the game, so you're able to mix and match a whole host of different effects at once. Also keep in mind that tonic effects will stack on top of each other. Most tonics can be purchased at the Gatherer's Garden vending machine, while others can be found throughout the world of Rapture or can be unlocked by using the research camera on enemies.

Security Tonics
Hardy Machines – Friendly turrets and bots have more health.
Handyman – Repair damaged bots and turrets with a small eve cost. Also gives random names to friendly bots and turrets.

‘Borderlands’ DLC Review – ‘Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot’

The second DLC pack for "Borderlands" (one of my favorite games of 2009) has arrived, offering a pretty unique twist to the original game's experience. But is it worth $10? Let's take a look!

The Basics

Inspired by "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome," "Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot" consists of 3 large arena maps and a small lobby map. Hoping into one of the arenas via the lobby kicks off a tournament which plays out a lot like "Smash TV" or, more recently, Firefight Mode in "Halo 3: ODST." Waves of different enemies will spawn in and you basically have to survive. Last long enough and the game will be reward you with delightful guns.

The layout of each tournament is as follows:

Small Tournament - 5 waves of enemies per round with five rounds in total. (Estimated length: 45 minutes)
Big Tournament - 5 waves of enemies per round with 20 rounds in total. (Estimated length: 4 hours)

The Highs

Refreshing Rule Sets
The five waves in each round feature different enemy types. For example, the second wave is always the "Gun Wave," where enemies all carry firearms. The fifth wave is always the Boss Wave, where you'll face one of the main game's main baddies.

This keeps things sorta fresh, but rules (known in the dev team as Moxxi Maxims) really help to mix things up. Once you get to the fifth round, a new rule will be added at the beginning of a wave. Rules range from "Beef Cake" (increased enemy health) and "Close Combat" (lower player accuracy but increased damage) to "Low Gravity" (super jumps!) and "Naked" (player has no shield). You basically need to come prepared with a nice array of weapons to be able to handle whatever rules the game throws at you, as your play style will change dramatically depending on the current rules. Here's a full list of them, if you're interested.

More Co-Op Friendly
While the main game of "Borderlands" was always improved by having friends along for the ride, it was never required. "Mad Moxxi" doesn't require co-op, either, but it's almost mandatory if you want to stand a chance against the harder rounds. It encourages teamwork and allows players to coordinate their layouts to compliment strengths and weaknesses. This was never something people did in the main game, preferring to simply have the best personal loot. It's definitely a nice change of pace.

The Bank
"Mad Moxxi" introduces a much-needed item bank feature to "Borderlands," allowing you to store up to 42 of your favorite weapons. This is capped by your level, and you unlock more slots by purchasing upgrades in the nearby weapon store. Finally I have a place for all those fancy oranges that are basically worthless but fire bullets in a happy face pattern!

The Lows

Big Tournament Length
The small tournament is a perfect 45 minutes, which seems like a pretty common length of time for gamers with other priorities. The big tournament, however, takes at least three and a half hours, which is probably twice as long as it should be. There are spots to take breaks in the midst of that, but if you leave or, god forbid, the host's console shuts down, all your progress will be lost.

Considering the reward for completing all three achievements is a bonus skill point (an extremely valuable asset at level 50), having to start a 3.5 hour journey from scratch would drive me up a wall. At the very least there should've been a checkpoint at Round 10 that allows you to continue on from that point with subsequent play throughs. I realize that the idea was to make this DLC pack more hardcore, but I think Gearbox may have gone a little overboard.

Needs More Maps
Given that you're spending upwards of 15 hours in these maps, it would've been nice to have seen one or two more thrown in there. The three arena maps, while interesting, are likely to get a little stale.

Loot Rewarding
I guess it remains true to tenants of "Borderlands," but I wish there was another way to reward loot at the end of the round. Currently, when you finish a round, random loot rains down from the center of the arena. This is fine if you're playing with friends, but with random folks it just turns into a cash grab and people end up camping at the center point to ensure they get the best stuff.

The game actually keeps track of how many kills each player gets, so it would've been nice if loot was rewarded based on group contribution rather than greed, but in the end I guess it's your own fault for not having real friends to play with. Or for having friends that are jerks.

Final Word

If you found "Borderlands" too easy, "Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot" is refreshingly challenging and well worth your time. I strongly recommend playing it with friends and, if you're going for one of the big tournaments, blocking out a big chunk of a Saturday afternoon to get through it. The gameplay variety and overall aesthetic fits extremely well for the franchise and I wouldn't mind seeing this idea expanded with more maps, modifiers and enemy types.

‘Borderlands’ Second DLC Pack Officially Revealed

borderlands_dlcpack2After rumors, speculation and an accidentally broken embargo by a site that shall not be named, the second DLC content pack for "Borderlands" has been revealed by 2K Games today. Titled "Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot," the next pack has takes previous Mad Max similarities and cranks them to 11.

Here's the official rundown on what you can expect in the pack, with the important parts bolded by me so you don't have to do nearly as much reading:

Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot is an intense single-player or cooperative experience that expands the mayhem by adding three new Riot Mode arenas where players will endure an onslaught of Pandora’s baddest enemies. Working together, players will fend off the masses as they fight for fame, honor, and more importantly, loot. Mad Moxxi’s Underdome Riot also adds a new bank feature, which allows players extra storage capacity for when they encounter one of the more than 16 million weapons that Borderlands has to offer; and the ability to acquire two additional skill points as quest rewards, making their characters even more powerful than before.

So this description has me a little worried. There were two PvE arenas in the main game, and the gameplay in each was basically "kill X number of guys as they spawn in." It was fun, but not very involved, and given the creativity that went into the last DLC pack, I was really hoping for an equal amount of scope this time around. I've reached out to Gearbox to see if we can get some clarification on the content itself, and whether the arenas will be more involved than what appeared in the original game.

That being said, the addition of a bank is great news, and the ability to earn two additional skill points is basically the equivalent of Gearbox increasing the level cap without actually doing it.

The pack will be on sale for $9.99, arriving on 360 on December 29th, with the PS3 version coming January 7th. It'll also come to PC, but no date has been set for that.
