Pieces of broken gold jewelry
If you are intending to join the gold prospecting revolution you will probably have more luck with a jeweler’s loop than with a metal detector. That is not to say that modern gold prospecting using detectors and pans is not a great hobby (it is) but there is probably more gold in that old chest or the second hand store than you will find in ‘them thar hills’.
Armed with your trusty magnifier or glass you can hunt through mountains of cheap costume jewelry and possibly find yourself a real gem. If not diamonds and pearls, you may find that little stamp that everyone else has overlooked that says 18K. Essentially if an item of jewelry has a number 10, 14, or 18 with K, kt, or ct after it, it is gold and will be worth at least something.
Experience and research are your best tools when gold or treasure hunting. Learning about gold coins and how to tell the genuine from the fake can be invaluable. You may pick up a real bargain, or you may save yourself some money. Having your gold valued is always a good idea (get a written valuation especially if you intend to sell), but we usually can’t take a piece of jewelry or a coin off for valuation before purchasing it, so making an educated choice is often the best we can do.
When it comes to getting cash for gold there are several options available. If you in the possession of gold bars the most straightforward method is to sell them on. Gold bars are straightforward enough; they will have a standard weight and a standard price (which varies of course with the gold market at the time).
Coins can be cashed in for their basic weight in gold and depending on what karot they are. Some coins are rarer than others though and may be worth quite a lot more than simply their weight and purity in gold. Take them to a reputable dealer/ and or find out as much about that coin in particular or coins in general.
Gold (and other) jewelry is another area where it can be harder to judge value. A rare antique piece that is in good condition, or perhaps has religious or cultural meaning, could have a lot more value than just its gold. Again, have it valuated and perhaps look to selling to a jeweler or pawn shop who will recognize its value. Selling through auction is another option that may bring you more than the gold itself is worth.

Pieces of broken gold jewelry, single earrings and pieces with missing stones or pieces that are heavily dented will probably be worth more to you to sell as scrap gold. Many people are finding that finding and collecting these bits and pieces can be, if not hugely lucrative, at least a nice little income on the side.
Take a look at what you have, maybe get into a new hobby, and see if you can find out just what your gold is worth.
